How to use this calculator

Three inputs are all you need. The results update as you type — no submit button.

1

Enter your stitch count

Find the stitch dimensions on your pattern — usually printed as width × height. A pattern might say 140w × 98h.

2

Choose your Aida count

14-count is standard for most kits and printed patterns. If your pattern does not specify, use 14.

3

Set your border allowance

Two inches on each side is the standard minimum. It gives you enough to hoop and frame without the design touching the edge.

The cross stitch fabric size formula

The calculator uses a straightforward formula. Worth knowing so you can double-check the output:

Fabric width = (stitch width ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2)

Fabric height = (stitch height ÷ Aida count) + (border × 2)

For a 140 × 98 stitch design on 14-count Aida with a 2-inch border: width = (140 ÷ 14) + (2 × 2) = 10 + 4 = 14 inches. Height = (98 ÷ 14) + 4 = 7 + 4 = 11 inches.

Aida count comparison

The count number tells you how many stitches fit in one inch. Higher count = smaller stitches = more detail possible. See the Aida fabric calculator for count-specific tools.

Frequently asked questions

Divide your stitch width by the Aida count to get the design width in inches, then add your border allowance on both sides. Do the same for height. For a 100×100 stitch design on 14-count Aida with a 2-inch border: (100÷14) + (2×2) = about 11 inches square. The calculator above does this automatically.
