How the thread calculation works

The formula is straightforward:

Total thread = stitch count × 2.5 inches × number of strands

Skeins per color = (total thread ÷ colors) ÷ skein length, rounded up

For 5,000 stitches using 2 strands: 5,000 × 2.5 × 2 = 25,000 inches. Divided by 6 colors = about 4,167 inches per color. Divided by 288 (DMC) = 14.5, rounded up to 15 skeins per color. With the 15% buffer: 17 skeins per color.

How many strands should you use?

Your pattern specifies the strand count — always follow that first. As a general guide: 2 strands on 14-count gives clean, standard coverage. 3 strands on 11-count fills the larger holes well. 1 strand on 18-count prevents the holes from being overfilled. The number of strands directly affects how many skeins you need, which is why the calculator has a strands selector.

Frequently asked questions

Each cross stitch uses 2.5 inches of thread per strand. Multiply your total stitch count by 2.5, then multiply by the number of strands (usually 2). Divide that total by 288 (DMC skein length in inches) and round up to get the number of skeins.
