Round hoops vs oval hoops vs scroll frames

Round hoops are standard for most cross stitch. They are cheap, widely available, and work for the majority of square or roughly square designs. The 6-inch and 8-inch are the two most common sizes.

Oval hoops suit rectangular designs where a round hoop would leave a lot of unused space inside the frame. Less common than round hoops but useful for landscape-format designs.

Scroll frames and Q-snaps are better for large projects. They hold the fabric taut without the circular pressure mark that hoops can leave, and they let you roll the fabric to work on different sections. Once your design exceeds about 12 inches in any direction, a scroll frame is worth considering.

What happens if your hoop is the wrong size?

A hoop that is too small distorts the fabric around the edges of the working area and forces you to re-hoop mid-project, which risks leaving hoop marks on already-stitched sections. A hoop that is too large is generally fine — you lose some comfort from the extra weight, but the stitching is not affected. The minimum safe rule is: hoop diameter must be at least 2 inches wider than the largest dimension of your fabric.

Frequently asked questions

It depends on your fabric size, not the Aida count. Enter your fabric dimensions in the calculator above to get a recommendation. As a general guide: a 12×12 inch piece of fabric needs at least a 10-inch hoop.
